The star of today’s Idaho Preferred Producer Origin Story is @owyheeproduce, where tradition and innovation intersect on 4,000 acres of fertile land at the Idaho-Oregon border in Parma, ID. Since 1954, this third-generation family farm has been dedicated to quality, commitment, and growth, fostering strong family bonds. Let’s hear from some key family members about this agricultural company’s origins and vision.

Founded by veteran Owen Froerer after his return from the Korean War, Owyhee Produce has evolved from humble beginnings with rented ground and equipment. Owen’s vision extended beyond farming; it aimed to unite his family and cultivate not just crops but a shared future.

Owyhee Produce is considered a mid-range producer, cultivating over nine different types of crops and, today, stands as one of the nation’s top ten onion growers contributing crop outputs that can feed 38 million people annually. You can find their watermelons and onions in major grocery stores like @walmart, @albertsons, @kroger, to name a few. In the wake of their impressive growth, the folks at the helm remain deeply committed to quality and their community connections.

Matt Wissel of @wisselfarms shared one of his many crops with us during the Idaho Preferred Month Harvest Tour! In addition to talking about his kohlrabi, squash and TACO CORN (whuut??!! YUMM!) he offered a sneak peek of the gorgeous squash blossoms soon to be available in their upcoming Harvest Club Subscription Box!

Matt Wissel has personally been farming and growing a vast array of delicious produce for Idahoans (and beyond) for over 50 years, and his family farms have been in operation since 1911! You have likely enjoyed Wissel Farms sweet corn available at grocers like @albertsons, or from the Wissel Farms market stand in Nampa.

Idaho Preferred Month has begun, and during this peak harvest season, Idahoans have access to the vast abundance of our Gem State’s diverse agricultural offerings. Bonnie from @petersfamilyfarms shares a quick tip about eating chickpeas, AKA garbanzo beans, in this little down on the farm #bts clip! She offers these nutritious and delicious beans in her CSA boxes and also, the “Jimmy” she refers to in this clip is Jimmy Vasquez, lead chef at @theyellowbrickcafe, one of the area restaurants Bonnie supplies her produce to! It’s a great story about Idaho chefs who are committed to sourcing Idaho grown ingredients from Idaho farmers, ranchers, and food crafters and strengthening local economies in the process!

Know your farmer, know your food! We felt beyond grateful hosting chefs and representatives of @acf_Idaho chapter, as well as culinary pros from @theaveryhotelboise
@fork_boise @alavita_boise
@IdahoProvisions, @leku_ona_boise @solidgrillandbar and @dejabrew_laughalatte in our first Chef to Farm Tour Experience since pre-pandemic days. These agricultural experiences facilitate lasting connections between members of our food service industry and our local agricultural community.

In a world filled with culinary possibilities, its truly remarkable when chefs remain #loyaltolocal. Knowing our food source brings a sense of connection like no other, and though our itinerary was ambitious, taking these culinary pros to visit five different farms and facilities offered a direct connection with the growers and makers of local ingredients – not to mention the menu inspiration from the farms and fields that abound!

Meet your local Organic Wheat, Oats, and Grape Farmers! An Idaho Preferred Farmer Origin Story with Harvest Ridge Organics @harvestridgemilling 🌾

You may know the Lewis-Clark region in North Central Idaho for producing world-class grapes, but it is also one of the few places on earth that has the capability to cultivate hard red spring wheat, which surpasses all other grains, including oats, in terms of protein content.

Did you know that Idaho-based Harvest Ridge Organics flours are used by chefs and bakers nationwide to craft delectable, certified organic pastries, bread, and pizza crusts?

Meet Doug McIntosh, the owner of Harvest Ridge Organics situated in the picturesque Lewiston, Idaho. Doug shares with us how his family obtained their land and expanded their organic fields. He also provides insights into their cultivation and milling processes, which enable them to distribute their products nationwide.

Today, this Idaho-based fifth-generation family farm prides itself on producing some of the finest certified organic wheat, rolled oats, and sustainably farmed soft Durum wheat to come out of the region!
